The Republican Party has announced the creation of a committee to study what happened to the non-existent red wave they were all predicting. Among the members of this committee is Blake Masters, a Trump sycophant who went down in a blaze of glory and whom, we might presume, has no idea what he did wrong or he wouldn’t have done it.
According to RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel, they will also be creating a Republican Party Advisory Council. So far, both Blake Masters and Kellyanne Conway have been slated to join that body. The council’s goal will be to “chart a winning course in the years to come.”
McDaniel said she was “thrilled” to be working with such a “talented group of Republicans” who she expects to “grow the party, hold Democrats accountable, and elect Republicans.”
These same “talented” Republicans were responsible for the dismal showing in the midterms. It’s also interesting to note that none of their stated goals include checking in with the American people to ask them why the red wave never came.
As a member of the opposing party, the one that fared much better than expected, I’d like to offer them a few tips:
Develop a platform and tell the American people what it is.
Denounce white supremacy, misogyny, and antisemitism.
Stop telling people you’re going to take away Medicare and Social Security.
Stop trying to prevent people from voting.
Stop tolerating Trump.
Stop using the Supreme Court to promote your political agenda.
Stop claiming you are the party of freedom, even as you take our freedoms away.
This is a short list, but you get the idea. Unfortunately, Republican leadership seems poised to do nothing more than update their advertising message in the hope that in 2024 the American people won’t see through it again.
Meanwhile, both Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz want to rebrand the Republican Party as the “party of the working class.” That’s going to be a tougher sell. I have some advice for them, too:
If you want to be the party of the working class, you needn’t go to the trouble of trying to change the Republican Party — just become a Democrat. Easy peasy.
