Trump Might Not Win the Republican Primary
It’s a private vote — nobody will know who voted for Trump and who didn’t
It’s not the accepted scenario — I get that. Trump has been the presumptive Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election since long before anybody else declared their candidacy. But if you believe Mitt Romney, there are a lot of people in the Republican Party who support Trump purely out of fear.
They fear what Trump’s supporters might do to them and their families if Trump finds a reason to target any one of them for failing to provide the level of obsequiousness Trump desires at any given moment. They fear losing elections if they do anything to alienate Trump’s base. But they also know he was guilty of an insurrection and has single-handedly made their party an international joke.
And now that Trump has announced his plans to use the military for his personal army and hijack the justice system to pay back all those who’ve dared to challenge him, they fear something else even more. What Republicans fear now is the complete disintegration of their party.
It’s all about fear — And Republicans are cowards
But what will happen when they can vote against Trump without Trump knowing about it?
I predict a lot of Republicans will be thrilled to vote for anybody other than Trump. You won’t hear about it in the polls or in interviews. But when their actions require no courage — when they can take a stand against insanity without risking a thing — Republicans will be standing in line to say goodbye to the man who has been holding them hostage for the past six years.
It’s not much of a choice
Republicans can either stick with a grifter who is committed to destroying democracy in America and will leave their party in ruins, or they can support another Republican candidate who will at least give them a fighting chance at saving both their party and their country.
When faced with this choice, I believe Republicans will let Trump go. If I am wrong, at least we will have undeniable proof that Republicans are not just cowards; they are also idiots.
Hopefully, that will be enough to convince the rest of us to vote for Democrats.
Here’s a great quote about Trump from George Conway: “Every accusation is a confession.” (Thanks to Lisa Saxe for sending this one to me.)
